a group is "a collection of individuals who, as a result of interacting with one another over a time, become interdependent, developing shared patterns of behaviour and a collective identity".
In this post I will blog about the importance of the importance of group communication in any group. Based on the Poole's Multiple Sequence Model, when a group does not balance the task track ,topic task and relationship task the group will not be able to progress due to tension and conflict.

This logo above shows the logo of the Malaysian Chinese Association.Well, this particular group is in a crisis since ten months ago due to problems between the President of the association and the Vice President.Due to conflict that both of them are in, the group has been in a chaos and has caused all the chinese in the nation to worry about the stability of the group.

This picture on the left shows the two people I mentioned earlier. On the left, shows Mr Chua Soi Lek and on the right, Mr Ong Tee Keat.
The problem basically is due to bad management of the relationship task. It all started when Mr Chua proposed 4 conditions , but Mr Ong rejected the first 2 and gave reasons that hurt Mr Chua deeply.
Mr Chua was involved in a sex scandal a couple of years ago and Mr Ong reignited it. Although it was a case resolved long ago, Mr Ong tried to shift the media's attention to Mr Chua's sex scandal case once again to try to cover up for his ongoing case where he was accused by the party for using the party's name for his own business purposes.
Mr Chua hit back at Mr Ong by setting a campaign of his own to smear Mr Ong's reputation.
Today, the case is still unresolved. All the members of the MCA is still not clear of the current situation the group is in.They are extremely worried that the group will not be able to regain its strength by the predicament the association face now. Both leaders failed to maintain the relationship task. The consequence of this problem is that the MCA is in a chaos now. The opposition party group is now gaining more and more supporters and this clearly shows the failure of the group to move forward. The task of the group as a leader is to care for the welfare of the chinese people in Malaysia, however, they let this relationship problem be the centre of topic now.
A group should overcome all these problems by possessing group synergy which is to support and be committed to the priorities and objectives rather than silly relationship problems.
What do you think is the main cause of the relationship task failure that MCA is facing now?
I think what you say is true. Group will encounter these problems if no synergy.and also i think that group problems always occur so its better to compromise to save the group from crashing
ReplyDeletei also agree with anonymous that a group should cooperate in order to reach success.
ReplyDeletegroup synergy sounds like a good method to overcome all these problems.
How many groups even reach its maximum potential?
ReplyDeleteIts a fact that so many groups do not maximize their ideas and direction of the group and quarrel have issues with one another.
whats the true cause? attributed to stupid r/s issues sometimes
i think as you said, group synergy should be done by groups if they intend to suceed.
keep it up!
Hey guys.yeah i also think that group synergy is a good way.oh and joanne thanks for the long comment
ReplyDeleteA group is meant to be a number of people working together, cooperating to achieve something. So when silly conflicts happen, it only does nothing except bringing more problems. Group synergy is definitely important
ReplyDeleteI like this post a lot.As I think group problems are too common today. Many of times group do not relate to each other well enough.Hence, causing many conflicts that are unresolved.the theory here is extremely relavant to the case you mentioned.
ReplyDeletesince you say the relationship problem has had such a drastic effect and outcome, i don't think its a silly problem...
ReplyDeleteanyhow, i think that the biggest problem between the two men has been miscommunication and maybe ego or attribution... which led to the group going through all the problems as they did not try to fix their problems together and think of the group's welfare, instead concentrated on their personal issues more...
Yeah it is true. it is stupid because now the news show them both like good friends and everything is settled.
ReplyDeletepolitics is really confusing.haha
yeah they shouldnt have even started this problem as the welfare is more important.
Leet!!!.I think that the theory u added in which is multiple sequence really connects tot he topic.as u can see that many people today diverse away from the main point.like our friendship group also must not end up lidat!!:)
ReplyDeleteDen again people are full of flaws.how can there be a perfect group?
ReplyDeletehey, i never meant perfect group should be obtained.im just trying to say that a group should not have qualms that are not necessary.and if every group were to have conflicts such as this.wont every group be in chaos?
ReplyDeleteWell..perhaps to soothe the tension in the group, there should be the presence of group maintenance roles e.g. the harmonizer. So when things go wrong, like the above, these individuals can step in to resolve the conflict.
ReplyDeleteWho won eventually?
ReplyDeleteI personally think that this is an ugly scene by the MCA, as their actions seem to me as airing dirty linen in public so as to aid themselves in their quest for power within the party itself. This depicts their inefficiency as well. I feel that the party should be more cohesive and learn to work things out so as to remain focussed on their aims of providing welfare and support for the Chinese groups in M'sia, instead of being individualistically self-centered, and not sparing a thought for the main racial grp they are representing.
