Non Verbal Communication

What is non verbal communication?

Non verbal communication is a way that people convey a message to another by using gestures or expressions without the use of words(verbal) .For instance, if i nod my head , it also may mean as me responding you with a ' yes'.
The Video above shows a footballer by the name of Craig Bellamy that plays for Manchester City slapping a fan that invaded into the football pitch at a crucial period to create havoc. Well, this video starts of my post on non verbal communication (Haptics) that I observed .
In retrospect to the video above, it shows the body gestures or body language Mr Bellamy was significantly unhappy with the fan .It was pretty easy to perceive by his actions that he was infuriated with the fan ,thus, slapping the fan to show his displeasure .
Likewise for this video above, shows Wayne Rooney, a footballer that plays for Manchester United sarcastically clapping in the face of the referee after he was booked for a soft challenge on the opposition player. Although no words are verbally contructed between the two individual. It is rather clear that Wayne's body gestures that he sarcastically clapped at the referee. If interpreted into verbal communication, his gesture maybe meant ," i disagree with you totally".
This video above is a MUST watch video. It demonstrates all the gestures that many may interpret wrongly while verbally communicating. Different country has different body language that could be misunderstood by another culture.
These are a few videos that show how directors and producers use nonverbal communication to attract and intrigue viewers even when there is no verbal communication exchanged.
This Tiger beer advert above shows two men pointing their fingers to their head and squeezed their eyes shut.Without verbally saying ,' i want tiger beer', the producer made the viewers understand what the actors were trying to make known to us through gesture and expression One reason why everyone understands this is also because it is part of the Kinesic Code 1 of the nonverbal codes named the emblem. This is so when it is an action that is a direct verbal translation that everyone knows already about.
This video above shows the 2009 commercial by the Heineken.Through watching this video, you would observe that there is non verbal communication. For instance, there was the part where the ladies were shock to hear people more enthusiastic than themselves.Their facial expressions (affect displays) are present in them. The producers made the message very clear to the viewers non verbally.
Many people would suggest that non verbal videos are much more intriguing and nice to watch. However, non verbal communication could create misunderstandings pretty easy if two different culture people view a particular gesture or body language.
I personally feel that non verbal communication is a pivotal aspect in communication ,provided the sender understands the different interpretation different cultures or societies may perceive as.
what do you think?
hi Jeremy, its me again. (ha ha ha)-> what do you infer from this?
ReplyDeleteyour 9 mins video on gestures across cultures was very enlightening! i thk in our country, oh wait, my country (Spore), we dont put as much emphasis into handshakes like others from West Africa etc. im secretly thankful for that because i cannot imagine myself shaking another's hand in any other manner than our own. its because of the way we're brought up that we perceive the handshakes of other cultures as 'different', or to the extent of 'queer'.
i like how you used Rooney's handshake as an example. he obviously meant it with much sarcasm towards the ref. one can easily infer from the speed he clapped (like two slow beats) and the annoyed frown he put on. haha very cute.
in a nutshell, non-verbal communication plays a big part in our everyday life. and as we grow older with experience, we tend to interpret better though everyone still make mistakes every now and then.
stef!
Hey Jeremy.
ReplyDeleteit is very interesting reading this post.
most of the gestures we use may seem very simple to us but it actually meant more than what we knew.
i guess it is better to becareful the next time i use a gesture to anyone.
HAHAHAHAHAHA why lah nonverbal ish. =)
ReplyDeletei did a nonverbal communication video for my group presentation a few months ago. HAHAHA totally miss the day sei. and not to be forgotten that ambiguous, abstract, sound (like sigh/cry) also considiered as nonverbal =]
hey!
ReplyDeletei learrnt a lot about the many many "different" aspects of non verbal communication especially after coming to singapore (im from india) as one the most prominent gestures i did not understand was of the number 6 by the show of fingers. therefore i completely agree with your blog post and view.
your 'MUST watch video' is especially interesting and imensely amplifies your point.
although non verbal communication can be misinterpreted often,
i also feel that it tends to become a special or sort of a secret language between certain people too and that's kind of nice... something like having your own personal language...
good job though :)
I think that it is true that advertisers have to use non verbal cues into adverts to make the viewers remember.
ReplyDeleteNon verbal communication plays an essential part in our lives.
ReplyDeletelike for example right,
i want to show someone direction.i use non verbal cues better than me explaining bt he or she dont understand.
good one man
Non verbal communication is of course very important.
ReplyDeleteNobody can't deny we use non verbal com almost everyday or every hour or even every minute.
And it does cause misunderstanding sometimes when ppl misinterprets the other party's intentions.
For example, a simple nod or shake of the head, a smile and hand gestures. Those are the part of our everyday lives.
Agreed with you. Non verbal communication does fickle with the minds of individual as everyone has their own mind to interpret them. However, without non verbal communication, life would be just too much of a "blahh" ;)
ReplyDeleteGood topic on non verbal communication, especially the gestures in different culture video :)

Hey thanks everyone for being so nice and commenting for me.appreciate it.and yeah i picked the videos because i think it relates to like what people do when they want to express themselves.:)
ReplyDeleteLeet Sern, I think that sometimes its more important to emphasize on the text rather than the video.however i think the videos show substancial information on how non verbal is constructed.
ReplyDeletegood try, but can be improved
